A Look at NerdWallet

Find the best credit card deals and banking services with NerdWalletConfused about the many financial options out there? You’re not alone.

Every time a credit card offer comes in the mail, you’re probably wondering whether it’s a good one. What about the many bank account options available? Should you go for a savings account? A CD? What about a money market account?

This is where NerdWallet can help. The website offers you the opportunity to compare different types of personal finance, investing, banking and insurance offers to find the one best suited to your needs and budget.

Plus, the website also offers information about other financial issues, such as paying for hospitals, saving money with coupons and flying on the cheap.

The Positives

  • You can customize your options. For example, when you want to compare saving accounts, you can enter your location or choose to go national, how much your initial deposit will be and the deposit term (anywhere from six months to five years). This allows the website to get you the best results so you don’t have to wade through lots of useless results that don’t fit your criteria.
  • The website also offers informational articles on everything from searching for scholarships to understanding financial terms. You can learn how to save money on airfare, how to find cheaper hospitals and where to go for free checking options.
  • NerdWallet.com offers a very unique tool that allows you to compare the price for almost 200 medical procedures in hospitals around the country. This way you know where to go if funds are scarce but you need to address a medical problem. As of 2013, there are over 3000 hospitals in their database, and more will be added in the future.

The Negatives

  • You can’t save your searches, so once you find what you need, you’ll have to either print it or copy/paste into a document.
  • While there’s plenty of financial information and comparison tools on the website, NerdWallet is primarily about credit card and bank accounts comparison, so that’s the focus of the site. Not really a negative point, but it would be nice to see the site develop more into it’s other categories.

All in all, we think NerdWallet.com is a great way to get financial information quickly and for free. What do you think?

  1. This article reminds me that I really should check out some of those credit card offers that come in… I usually just dump them right out into the trash. I don’t really use credit cards, and I never have. I think I have two store cards that I got when the discounts for opening them were too good to ignore, and that’s it.

  2. Looks like it could be useful. I really should transfer my credit card debt to save paying the interest, I don’t owe that much so I should be able to pay if off within 6 months or so. So this should show me the best deal 🙂

  3. Since I don’t use credit cards I probably won’t use that tool. But it is always good to compare insurance rates, so I might use it for that. Thanks for the good info!

    • You’re welcome! It actually has more than just credit cards – there’s banking, medical care, travel and so on- you should definitely find something on there that will help save you money. They have a section with a whole range of discount coupons too. It’s a pretty useful resource IMHO.

  4. This is actually a great idea! So many people are clueless about financial matters – and who can blame them? The small print and legalese on banking and credit card offers seems designed to purposely confuse. I’ll check the site out to see if I can benefit. Thanks!

  5. Too bad you can’t save your searches. Sometimes you wonder what developers were thinking when they’ve left out so an obviously useful (and easily coded) feature. Still, a very useful site. Thanks for sharing.

  6. Interesting. Although I only have one credit card, I try to stick to a minimum, otherwise I go nuts and spend too much. But finding great deals is not a bad idea 😀 I’ll definitely check NerdWallet. That’s a funny name, by the way 🙂

    • It is a funny name, but I think choosing it makes them stand out from some of the other brands. It kind of sticks in your head too.
